A mother has a 5 year old son and is afraid to go to school. Every morning he finds every way to get out of school, to prolong preparation time, or he will cry and get angry if someone accidentally upsets him. After almost everything failed, he made a condition with his mother when she suddenly asked him what he wanted to eat this morning: "If you eat breakfast, you won't go to school, if you go to school, you won't eat breakfast."

So in the above story, if we were the mother, should we let the boy make his own choices? And in what cases is it absolutely not advisable?

In what cases should children not be given a choice?

Giving children choices can help them realize their role as well as help them make decisions based on their thinking. This is an important part of the brain's cognitive function before age 5. When children build the ability to evaluate and make their own choices, they will have responsibility and good awareness when they grow up.

What happens when children are given a role in choices? When children make choices, they begin to evaluate what they need. What children need is what they really need. Imagine that when children have to choose to buy only 1 candy bar out of many candy bars, they begin to recognize each quality of each choice and choose what they want to happen. Children's emotions are also regulated by children themselves. That's what we want children to be more mature about.

However, your choice should avoid the following problems:

1. Responsibilities children have to do such as homework, going to school... Responsibility is something that cannot be chosen. If you use it as a condition for children to choose, they will not realize that it is their responsibility.

2. The child has a direct interest related to money or promises. The purpose of choice is to help children make decisions based on developing their ability to self-evaluate and make their own choices. If the child has direct benefits from money or promises, the child's decision will depend on these factors. This causes children to lose the ability to judge from their own thoughts.

WHEN TO GIVE CHILDREN CHOICES?

Giving children choices can be applied well and effectively when:

1. Let children choose what they want to play with.

2. Let children choose books they want to read

3. Let your child choose the clothes he or she wants to wear

4. Let children choose how they want to be helped. For example, if your child has difficulty putting on a shirt, you can ask: Mom is here, when you need my help you can ask me.

5. Give children choices when they have difficulty deciding or want to have it all. For example. Give children a choice when buying candy at the supermarket: 1. just 1 piece; 2. buy nothing.
